Issues That Matter

Where John Reny stands on the issues facing ME voters.

Lowering the Cost of Living

Maine families are being squeezed by inflation, high energy prices, and a tax burden that keeps growing. John will fight to reduce the financial pressure on working households in Augusta and across District 59.

Maine consistently ranks among the highest-taxed states in the nation, and District 59 families feel it every month when the bills arrive. John supports reducing the income tax burden on working Mainers, opposing new fees and mandates that drive up everyday costs, and pushing back against energy policies that inflate home heating and electricity bills. He believes Augusta families should keep more of what they earn and that government should live within its means — just like every household in District 59 has to.

Fiscal Responsibility & Smaller Government

Runaway state spending is a threat to Maine's future. John will vote against bloated budgets and demand accountability for every tax dollar spent in Augusta and statewide.

Maine's state budget has ballooned in recent years with little to show for it in terms of improved services or quality of life for ordinary residents. John believes in zero-based budgeting principles, sunset reviews of state agencies, and a firm commitment to not spending more than the state takes in. He will push for transparent government spending, oppose new bureaucracies, and make sure that when taxpayers' money is spent, it goes toward core services — roads, public safety, and education — not political projects.

Supporting Small Businesses

Augusta's small businesses are the backbone of the local economy. John will fight to cut red tape, reduce regulatory burdens, and create an environment where entrepreneurs can thrive.

Maine has some of the most burdensome regulations in New England, and small business owners in District 59 pay the price through compliance costs, licensing hurdles, and an ever-growing list of mandates. John will work to streamline permitting, reduce occupational licensing barriers, oppose minimum wage increases that harm small employers, and push back against state regulations that put Maine businesses at a competitive disadvantage. A strong local economy starts with letting business owners do what they do best — create jobs and serve their communities.

Education Freedom & Local Control

Parents in District 59 deserve a voice in their children's education. John supports school choice, parental rights, and returning control of education to local communities and families — not state bureaucrats.

John believes education decisions are best made at the local level, by parents and community members who know their children and their schools. He supports expanding Maine's school choice options, ensuring parents have full transparency into curriculum and classroom content, and opposing one-size-fits-all mandates from Augusta that ignore the unique needs of local districts. John also believes in supporting teachers who are dedicated to academic excellence and giving schools the flexibility to meet students where they are — without ideological interference.

Public Safety & Law Enforcement

Safe neighborhoods are the foundation of a healthy community. John stands firmly behind Maine's law enforcement officers and will oppose any efforts to defund or undermine local police.

Augusta and the communities of District 59 deserve to feel safe in their homes, schools, and streets. John will champion strong funding for law enforcement, oppose bail reform measures that put repeat offenders back on the street, and support tough penalties for fentanyl and drug trafficking that continues to devastate Maine families. He will work to ensure that our state police and local departments have the resources, training, and legal backing they need to do their jobs effectively. Public safety is not a partisan issue — it is a basic promise government must keep.

Protecting Maine's Constitutional Rights

John is an unwavering defender of the Second Amendment and all constitutional rights. He will oppose any legislation in Augusta that infringes on the freedoms Mainers have always cherished.

Maine has a proud tradition of respecting individual liberties, and John intends to keep it that way. He will vote against any new gun control measures that penalize law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to stop criminals, oppose government overreach into personal and medical decisions, and defend free speech and religious liberty for every Maine resident. John believes the government's role is to protect your rights — not restrict them — and he will be a consistent, reliable vote for constitutional conservatism in the Maine House.
